A two-night, roughly 1,400-mile private railcar journey across the American West aboard the most beautiful train route in North America. Departing Denver Union Station in the morning, the train climbs into the Front Range, threads the Moffat Tunnel, and follows the upper Colorado River through Gore Canyon and Glenwood Canyon. After an overnight crossing of Utah and the Great Salt Lake Desert, the second day unspools across the Nevada high desert, climbs the Sierra Nevada past Donner Lake, and descends through the gold country into the San Francisco Bay Area.

    Day 1 | Board in Denver

    Guests board at Denver's beautifully restored Beaux-Arts Union Station. Settle into your private railcar and enjoy a welcome reception as the train climbs westward into the Front Range of the Rockies.

  2. Moffat Tunnel
    Day 1 | Crossing the Continental Divide

    The train climbs more than 4,000 feet from Denver through a series of horseshoe curves and tunnels, finally piercing the Continental Divide via the 6.2-mile Moffat Tunnel and emerging into the ski village of Winter Park.

  3. Glenwood Canyon, CO
    Day 1 | Along the Colorado River

    The afternoon's centerpiece: the train follows the Colorado River for hours through the dramatic walls of Gore Canyon, Byers Canyon, and Glenwood Canyon, with rafters waving from the rapids below.

    Day 1 | Western Slope Wine Country

    A late-afternoon service stop at the largest city on Colorado's Western Slope, near the wine country of the Grand Valley and the dramatic red sandstone of Colorado National Monument.

  5. Green River, UT
    Day 1 | Sunset on the Book Cliffs

    The train follows the Colorado River into Utah through Ruby Canyon, then climbs along the spectacular Book Cliffs as the sun sets over the high desert.

    Day 2 | Overnight Service Stop in Salt Lake City

    A predawn service stop in Salt Lake City near the Utah State Capitol and Temple Square, before the train heads west across the Great Salt Lake Desert and into Nevada.

    Day 2 | Humboldt River Country

    Wake to the wide-open sage country of the Great Basin, following the Humboldt River through Elko and Winnemucca � old mining and ranching towns of the Nevada outback.

    Day 2 | Climbing the Sierra Nevada

    An afternoon stop in Reno, then a spectacular climb up the Truckee River canyon into the snow-capped Sierra Nevada, with the Truckee tumbling alongside the train.

    Day 2 | Donner Lake and the High Sierra

    The train crests the Sierra Nevada at Donner Pass with sweeping views of Donner Lake far below before descending through Emigrant Gap toward the Sacramento Valley.

  10. San Francisco, CA
    Day 2 | Arrive at Emeryville

    Pull into Emeryville on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay, with the city skyline and Golden Gate Bridge visible in the distance. Disembark and connect to downtown San Francisco.

When you book an Expedition, you and your party get exclusive use of the private railcars listed. No other travelers will be onboard.

Gratuity for your onboard service staff is optional but always appreciated. It is not included in the price shown.

Can I book just a bedroom for an Expedition?

At this time, Expeditions can only be booked by one group for each departure date. We encourage you to include your closest family and friends in your booking.
