A westbound journey of roughly 1,800 miles across two nights, departing Kansas City Union Station in the late evening and running overnight across the Kansas prairies. Day two delivers the dramatic Raton Pass crossing of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the colonial-era plazas of New Mexico, and an evening descent through Apache country. The final day awakens in the Mojave Desert, threads the storied Cajon Pass into the Inland Empire, and concludes at Los Angeles Union Station.

    Guests board beneath the soaring vaults of the 1914 Beaux-Arts Kansas City Union Station. Settle into your private railcar and enjoy a welcome reception as the train heads west across the Missouri prairie under the night sky.

  2. Dodge City, KS
    Day 2 | The Old West at Dawn

    Wake on the Kansas plains near Dodge City � the legendary cowtown of Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson, the 'Queen of the Cowtowns' on the old Santa Fe Trail.

    Day 2 | Onto the Colorado High Plains

    A late-morning stop in La Junta on the Arkansas River, near Bent's Old Fort and the historic Santa Fe Trail. To the west, the snowy Sangre de Cristo Mountains rise from the plains.

    Day 2 | Crossing into New Mexico at Raton Pass

    A spectacular early-afternoon climb to 7,588-foot Raton Pass, the highest point on the America passenger rail network, with sweeping views back across the Colorado plains before the descent into northern New Mexico.

    A late-afternoon stop at the remote, atmospheric Lamy depot � the railhead for the City Different itself � with views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the high pinon country.

    An evening service stop in New Mexico's largest city, with sunset views of the Sandia Mountains turning watermelon-pink.

    A predawn service stop at the 1926 Tudor-Revival depot in Flagstaff, at 6,910 feet beneath the snow-capped San Francisco Peaks � the gateway to the Grand Canyon.

    Day 3 | Across the Mojave

    Mid-morning brings the wide-open Mojave Desert, with stops at the magnificent 1911 Casa del Desierto Harvey House in Barstow and the Route 66 hamlet of Needles on the Colorado River.

    Day 3 | Down into Southern California

    An afternoon descent through dramatic Cajon Pass, where the train threads between the San Gabriel and San Bernardino Mountains on the way down into the orange groves and palm-lined streets of the Inland Empire.

    Day 3 | Arrive in Los Angeles

    Pull into the iconic 1939 Los Angeles Union Station, a Mission/Streamline Moderne masterpiece in downtown LA. Disembark as your journey across the American Southwest concludes.

Will other travelers be on the railcars?

When you book an Expedition, you and your party get exclusive use of the private railcars listed. No other travelers will be onboard.

Is gratuity included?

Gratuity for your onboard service staff is optional but always appreciated. It is not included in the price shown.

Can I book just a bedroom for an Expedition?

At this time, Expeditions can only be booked by one group for each departure date. We encourage you to include your closest family and friends in your booking.
